Help! I Have Bad Breath !

Bad Breath is a great social stigma. It’s one of those things that we all occasionally experience and worry about – something that everybody in a room can be aware of, except for the person who has it. You can notice it immediately on somebody else, but it’s often nearly impossible to detect on yourself.

Now, if a good friend one day quietly let’s you know that you have bad breath, how do you go about treating it?

A supply of mints and chewing gums can only take you so far…

Bad breath can be a socially debilitating condition. It can make people shy, awkward and self-conscious.

Bad Breath can be caused by a number of different factors and some of these can be very obvious such as:

Smoking; Most people who don’t smoke, smell the odour of cigarettes on a smoker’s breath immediately. But smokers may be so used to the smell that they don’t realize it’s there. The obvious and only (in this case) solution, is to stop smoking.

Spicy meals are another culprit. Mints, chewing gums and mouthwashes can often help with this – as does brushing and flossing your teeth.

But, What are the deeper causes of bad breath?

In the vast majority of cases, it’s caused by the build up bacteria in your mouth.

As you can imagine, there’s a lot of traffic going through that mouth space. Food gets chewed up and mashed around and stuck in every little nook and cranny in between your teeth and gums. The bacteria in your mouth ( and there are over 200 different bacteria in your mouth )are there to break down the debri, which releases noxious gases while doing so. The best way to reduce these noxious gasses is to reduce the amount of debri that remains behind after you eat and drink by brushing and flossing.

If you’re NOT doing this, then the debris that builds up between your teeth and gums can lead to more serious issues, causing EVEN MORE bad breath. Issues such as gum disease and tooth decay.

Gum disease and tooth decay are one of the most common reasons of bad breath!

In fact, a decaying tooth and gum disease in your mouth will smell noticeably until you visit your dentist and have it treated.

Other factors that come into play for some people are certain medical conditions, and some people do suffer from an overgrowth of particular types of bacteria even though they don’t have tooth decay or gum disease. For these situations we have specific mouth rinses that combat these bacteria. And no, it’s not listerine.

Fortunately, bad breath is not too difficult to tackle, but a trip to your dentist is a must. A thorough check-up will reveal any tooth decay or cavities. Then a thorough scale and polish should help to remove much of the debris and tartar stuck between your teeth.

At Denal On park we take some time assessing your mouth so that we can recommend specific tools for you to use to combat the bad breath producing bacteria in your mouth. We will assess your diet and try and minimize foods that are the big culprits to producing bad breath or at the very least we will tell you what to do after you have eaten and drunk these foods and drinks. Sometimes specific mouthwashes will need to be recommended such as Closys mouthwash to combat the bad breath producing bacteria- but only once basic oral hygiene such as brushing your teeth and tongue correctly and flossing has been tackled and achieved.

Throughout it all, don’t forget too that your dentist is someone that you can trust when many of your closest friends will avoid telling you that you have bad breath, your dentist will certainly help you combat it.
