While brushing generally protects against dental cavities and subsequent tooth decay, bad brushing habits can actually damage your pearly whites. The longer bad brushing practices are left uncorrected the more your oral health is compromised. Read on as your  Dentist Milton points out 3 of the most commonly occurring bad brushing habits.

You’re not taking enough time when brushing your teeth.

Dentist Milton 3 Bad Habits When Brushing Your Teeth

While most people don’t have any problem brushing their teeth twice or even thrice a day, there are more than a few people who aren’t brushing their teeth long enough. Gentle yet thorough brushing should be performed for at least 2 minutes.

While this might sound easy and simple enough, primarily because it is, there are those who fall short of following this basic dental practice .

2 minutes is not just an arbitrary number. Dentist Milton believe that, with the right brushing techniques, it takes at least 2 minutes to properly clean all the surfaces of the teeth. 3 minutes is even better. To make 2 minute brushing easier to observe, most dentists recommend that you divide your teeth into 4 quadrants and spend a solid 30 seconds brushing each quadrant.

You’re not watching what you’re doing.

Dentists recommend that you brush your teeth in front on a mirror. This is so that you don’t miss any spot when you are cleaning your pearly whites. Most of the time, it is so easy to miss the areas surrounding the gum line, where plaque and tartar buildup is most pronounced, when you are just going though the motions of haphazard brushing of your teeth.

You don’t observe the right brushing techniques.

Tooth enamel consists of miniscule glass-like rods. When you vigorously brush your teeth from side to side, you are chopping down these brittle tooth enamel rods like trees. And your teeth are not trees. To properly brush your teeth, hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle. And instead of brushing from side to side, practice brushing your teeth in tight small circles.
